John Jones

Genre

Figurative, Sporting, Impressionism, Sculpture

Born in 1950 in Columbia, South Carolina, Jones is a seasoned artist and illustrator with over 25 years of experience. His clients have included Time Life Books, IBM, NASA, and the U.S. Postal Service, among others. Working in oils, acrylics, and watercolor, Jones is known for his meticulous technique and striking realism, often exploring themes of everyday life, history, and culture through layered detail and light.

Deeply committed to documenting the African American experience, Jones’ work traces a powerful visual narrative—from the transatlantic slave trade and the Middle Passage to contemporary Black life in America. He is the artist and author of Confederate Currency: The Color of Money, a traveling exhibition and book that examines the imagery of slavery on Southern currency.

His other notable series include works on the Buffalo Soldiers, the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, and African Americans in the military. Jones is currently developing a body of work focused on the Gullah people, capturing their rich cultural heritage and ongoing fight for preservation in the modern world.
